Ural Mountains
A mountain range in Russia that traditionally marks the boundary between Europe and Asia.
Soviet Union
A former communist state from 1912-1991, made up of Russia and multiple surrounding republics, governed by a single-party system.
Russian Plain
A vast, flat region covering much of Western Russia, known for its fertile soil and agricultural influence.
Chernozem
A rich, black soil found in parts of Russia and Ukraine. It is highly fertile and ideal for farming.
Taiga
A vast forested region of coniferous trees, covering much of Russia and Canada. It is characterized by cold climates.
Tundra
A treeless, cold region found in the Artic where only small shrubs, mosses, and grasses can grow due to permafrost.
Steppe
A large, flat, grassy plain common in Russia and Central Asia, known for its dry climate and suitability for grazing livestock
Serfdom
A feudal system where peasants called Serfs were bound to land owned by nobles and had limited freedom.
Communism
A political and economic system where all property is collectively owned and the government controls production and distribution.
Gulag
A system of harsh labor camps in the Soviet Union, where political prisoners and criminals were sent under Stalin’s rule.
Chronic
Describing a condition or problem that persists over a long period, such as chronic poverty or illness.
Glasnost
A policy introduced by Soviet Lader Mikhail Gorbachev promoting openness, freedom of speech, and gov. transparency.
Perestroika
A reform policy in the Soviet Union, initiated by Gorbachev, aimed at restructuring the economy and gov. to be more efficient.
