Geography
The study of Earth’s landscapes, environments, and the relationships between people and their environments.
Absolute Location
The exact position of a place on Earth’s surface, usually given in coordinates of latitude and longitude.
Relative Location
Where a place is located in relation to other places or landmarks.
Hemisphere
Half of the Earth, usually divided into Northern and Southern by the Equator, or Eastern or Western by the Prime Meridian.
Equator
An imaginary line around the Earth that is equal in distance from the North and South poles.
Prime Meridian
The meridian (line of longitude) at 0 degrees, from which all other meridians are measured, passing through Greenwich, England.
Latitude
The distance North and South of the Equator, measured in degrees.
Longitude
The distance East and West of the Prime Meridian, measured in degrees.
Formal Region
An area defined with official boundaries and recognized formally, like a country or a city.
Functional Region
An area organized around a central hub or focal point, like a metropolitan area with a city and its suburbs.
Perceptual Region
An area defined by people’s feelings and attitudes about it, which may vary from person to person, like “The Midwest” in the United States.
Archipelago
A group or chain of islands clustered together in a sea or ocean.
