Q

Four types of bones

A

Long bone - Bear the weight of the body (arms/ legs)

Short Bones - Allow skill and ease of movement ( wrist / fingers / ankles / toes)

Flat Bones - Protect organs (ribs/skull/pelvic bones/ shoulder blades)

Irregular Bones - Allow various degrees of movement and flexibility (spine)

Q

Three types of joints

A

Ball-And-Socket : movement in all directions
rounded end of one bone fits into the hollow end of another bone hip and shoulder joints

Hinge: movement in one direction only
elbow and knee joints

Pivot: turning from side to side
connection of the skull to the spine

Q

4 Types of tissue

A

Connective: anchors, connects and supports other tissues found in every part of the body

Epithelial: cover internal and external body surfaces
specialized to absorb, secrete (produce) fluids
excrete (eliminate) wastes and protect
skin, hair, nails, glands, and tissues that line passages open to the outside

Muscle: allows movement

Nervous: forms the brain, spinal cord and nerves
relays information to and from the brain and throughout the body

18
Q

Up

Down

A

Supinate (up)

Pronate (down)

19
Q

Cyt

A

Cell

20
Q

Lateral

A

Away from core

21
Q

Medial

A

Towards the core

22
Q

Superior

A

upper parts / surface of the body

23
Q

Inferior

A

lower parts / surface of the body

24
Q

Proximal

A

Towards the point of origin (usually arms legs)

25
Q

Distal

A

Away from the point of origin (arms legs)

26
Q

Anterior or Ventral

A

Front surface of the body

27
Q

Posterior or Dorsal

A

Back surface of the body

28
Q

Superficial

A

near the surface

29
Q

Deep

A

distant from the surface

30
Q

Peripheral

A

away from the center of the body

31
Q

4 Types of cells

A

Connective cells: support and connect body parts and exist in many different types

Epithelial cells: form protective coverings
sometimes produce fluids

Muscle cells: can contract and shorten or relax and lengthen to change the shape and position of body openings

surround body openings

Nerve cells: carry electrical messages and coordinate body activities

32
Q

Metastasis or Metastasized

A

the spread of cancer to other body parts

33
Q

Types of fractures

A

Open: (compound fracture) broken bone protrudes through the skin

Closed: bone is broken but the skin remains intact

34
Q

Atrophy

A

decrease in size or wasting away of tissue

35
Q

Contraction

A

lack of joint mobility caused by the abnormal shortening of a muscle

36
Q

Acute

A

felt sudden, injury, disease, trauma or surgery (less than 6 months)

37
Q

Chronic

A

Can be more than 6 months

38
Q

Radiating

A

extends from the injury site to other areas

39
Q

3 Layers Of Skin

A

Epidermis : outermost layer
contains living and dead cells
dead cells constantly flake off and are replaced with living cells
living cells contain pigment to give skin colour
has no blood vessels
has very few nerve endings

Dermis: second layer
made up of connective tissue
blood vessels, nerves, sweat, and oil glands in the dermis

Subcutaneous: third layer
attaches skin to muscle layer

40
Q

Abrasion

A

a wound caused by superficial damage to the skin
