Q

Four Chambers of the Heart

A

Right atrium: receives CO2 laden blood from the body tissues

Right ventricle: sends blood to the lungs for gas exchange

Left atrium: receives O2 rich blood from the lungs

Left ventricle: sends O2 rich blood out to the tissues and cells

Q

Four Components of Blood:

A

1) Red blood cells (RBC): Erythrocytes
transport O2 and CO2 via hemoglobin in RBC
produced by bone marrow

2) White blood cells (WBC): Leukocytes
protect the body against infection and foreign substances

3) Platelets: Thrombocytes
smallest formed elements of blood
needed for clotting

4) Plasma: 55% of the blood
liquid portion composed mainly of H2O (91%)
transports substances
needed by the cells for proper functioning (proteins / fats / carbohydrates)

Q

Hypoxia

A

Lack of oxygen

17
Q

Coronary Artery Disease (CAD)

A

the coronary arteries are narrowed or blocked

18
Q

Atherosclerosis

A

thickening and narrowing of the artery walls

19
Q

Angina Pectoris (Angina)

A

chest pain due to coronary artery disease

occurs when the heart does not get enough O2

increases the risk of a heart attack

20
Q

Myocardial Infarction (MI)

A

Heart attack

21
Q

Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)

A

occurs when the heart cannot pump blood normally

blood backs up and causes an abnormal amount of fluid in the tissues

can affect the left, right or both sides of the heart

22
Q

Arrythmias

A

Abnormal heart rhythms

Sometimes beats are skipped or extra beats occur
