An effective vision really entails multiple visions: (3)
- vision of oneself as a leader,
- one’s personal vision for the school,
- a shared vision developed in collaboration with school’s staff and the community and integrate a variety of perspectives
Factors to consider in formulating a vision: (3 who, how, how)
- who does the school serve and what are the unique characteristics and needs of that population (students, families, tax payers, business owners, community),
- how do you define quality teaching and what are your goals for learners and how will you measure (academically as well as psychologically, socially, and physically),
- how can you best utilize all of the available school-wide data (test scores, demographics, school of choice data, changing demographics)
Creating a shared vision….. An effective vision should: (3)
- provide guidance and inspiration to faculty and staff,
- motivate improvement, and
- engage students and parents to become enthusiastic participants in working together to achieve the school’s goals
Mission Statement: (4)

- it describes the school’s purpose, priorities, requirements, and operational cornerstones,
- the mission should be broken down into a set of specific goals that are quantifiable and measurable and
