Vision. Fields of Vision and the Visual Pathway. Flashcards
What is the visual field?
The part of the external world that is seen by the eye.
What part of the brain is the visual field transmitted to so it can be processed?
The visual cortex.
Do both eyes form the visual field?
No, each eye has its own individual visual field.
What kind of visual field do predatory animals have?
A large binocular field of vision.
What kind of visual field do prey animals have?
A monocular field of vision as their eyes are on the lateral sides of their head.
How to animals with monocular vision use their eyes to view the world?
They use each individual eye to survey the world and stay alert for predators.
What part of the eye picks up the light from anything within the field of vision?
The temporal retina.
Where do all of the nerve fibres from the retina travel to?
They all converge together to form the optic nerve.
What is the name of the location where the optic nerve originates from?
The optic disc.
Where does the optic nerve travel to and from?
From the optic disc.
To the base of the brain where it joins the brain at the optic chiasm.
What happens to nerve fibres of the optic nerve once it reaches the optic chiasm of the brain?
Some of the nerve fibres will cross over and some will not.
What fibres will cross over in the optic chiasm?
Anything from the peripheral field of vision will cross over.
Are the fibres from the peripheral field of vision contralateral or ipsilateral?
Contralateral.
Are the fibres from the central field of vision contralateral or ipsilateral?
Ipsilateral.
What happens to the nerve fibres after they have passed through the optic chiasm?
They run up the optic tract.
