visceral sensory neurons Flashcards
what do general visceral sensory neurons monitor?
stretch, temperature, chemical changes, irritation, pain
were are cell bodies of visceral sensory neurons located?
in the dorsal root ganglia
referred pain is?
visceral pain that is perceived as somatic in origin. and as pain in one or more dermatomes.
do visceral afferent belong to ANS?
no, but they travel with autonomics from dorsal root ganglia to get to the cavities
what is afferent information (sensory input) from visceral regions conveyed by?
spinal ganglion neurons (DRG)
How do peripheral branch axons of spinal ganglion neurons reach viscera
by following autonomics or vasculature
what are examples of referred pain regions?
diaphragm, pericardium and heart, heart, digestive tract, liver and gall bladder, kidney and ureter, pelvic organs
what causes referred pain?
visceral afferents enter the spinal cord at the same segmental level as somatic afferents from the same spinal ganglion.
