clinical disorders Flashcards
what is autonomic dysreflexia?
overactivity of the ANS causing an abrupt onset of excessively high blood pressure
what causes autonomic dysreflexia?
it is due to strong stimulation of the visceral afferents below the level of spinal cord injury without higher CNS toning or dampening down of the effect. Causes massive sympathetic discharge throughout body.
who does autonomic dysreflexia-hyperreflexia affect?
quadriplegics and paraplegics
who is at risk for autonomic dysreflexia?
persons that have spinal cord injury levels above T5.
What is Raynaud’s Disease? What provokes it?
disorder of the ANS characterized by abnormal constriction of blood vessels in extremities. it is provoked by exposure to cold or by emotional stress.
what are the symptoms of Raynaud’s disease?
small arteries to the fingers or toes can go into vasospasm. This constricts the vessels dramatically and temporarily limits blood supply. The affected body part can turn white or blue Repeated episodes have been to cause sores or tissue death.
what can trigger vasospasm attacks? What parts of body are most affected?
triggered by exposure to cold or stress. fingers, toes, nose, lips, ears, nipples
what is autonomic dysfunction in achalasia cardia?
defect in the autonomic innervation of the esophagus. A hyperactive lower esophageal sphincter fails to relax on swallowing.
what are some other disorders linked to ANS dysregulation?
hyperetension, PTSD, panic disorder, asthma, hypotension issues: vasovagal syncope, IBS and other GI issues, erectile dysfunction
