cranial nerve pathways and innervation Flashcards

Q

Oculomotor parasympathetic pathway

A

CNS: Edinger-Westphal nucleus/PNS: becomes OM nerve/traverse SURPERIOR ORBITAL FISSURE/synapse CILIARY GANGLION/postganglionic branches to sphincter pupillae m, ciliary m, ciliary processes (aqueous humor)

Q

oculomotor

motor pathway

A

oculomotor nuclear complex; Oculomotor nucleus; lower motor neurons for extraocular eye muscles; PNS OM nerve; traverse SUPERIOR ORBITAL FISSURE/ motor fibers to:
levator palpebrae superioris m
superior rectus m
medial rectus m
inferior rectus m
inferior oblique m
REMEMBER upper motor neurons already synapsed

Q

oculomotor sympathetic pathway

A

from intermediolateral cell column (T1-T3)/ Superior cervical ganglion/postganglionic sympathetic fibers course in adventitia of carotid artery/traverse optic canal/ branch: blood vessels past ciliary nerves , branch2: long ciliary nerves to counteract parasympathetic activity

Q

facial nerve CN VII

motor pathway

A

Facial motor nucleus/PNS internal acoustic meatus/ geniculate ganglion/ motor nerve is facial nerve; innervates stapedius muscle/cross stylomastoid foramen and innervate muscles of facial expression

Q

facial nerve CN VII sensory pathway

A

trigeminal spinal nucleus: general sensory & solitary nucleus: taste only/ PNS: internal acoustic meatus/geniculate ganglion nonsynapse split:

a. cutanous to pinna
b. taste buds of oral tongue with chorda tympani nerve and travel through submandibular ganglion
c. to taste buds on palate

Q

facial nerve CN VII

sympathetic pathway

A

from intermediolateral cell column (nucleus) T1-T3/ sympathetic chain/traversel superior cervical ganglion/ travel with aorta and carotid/ form deep petrosal nerve/ goes through pterygopalatine ganglion region to lacrimal gland and blood vessels in the orbit, nasal cavity and palate
