What is a POM-V Rx?
POM that can only be prescribed by a veterinary surgeon and supplied by a veterinary surgeon or a pharmacist by written Rx
What is a POM-VPS Rx?
POM which can only be prescribed and supplied by a vet surgeon, pharmacist or suitably qualified person on an oral/written Rx
What is an NFA-VPS Rx?
A category of medicine for non-food animals that can be supplied by a vet surgeon, a pharmacist or suitably qualified person
What is an NFA-VPS Rx?

Written Rx not required
What is an AVM-GSL medication?
An authorised veterinary medicine that is available on general sale
What are the legal Rx requirements for POM-V, POM-VPS and meds supplied under the cascade?
- Name, address, telephone number, qualification of prescriber (Where Sch 2/3 CDs are prescribed, also RCVS reg number)
- Name and address of owner
- Identification and species of the animal and its address (if different)
- Date (Valid for 6 months) (Sch 2/3 = 28 days)
- Name, quantity, dose and admin. instructions of medication (‘as directed’ not suitable)
- Necessary warnings and withdrawal period
- Where appropriate, statement ‘prescribed under the veterinary cascade
- If Rx is repeatable, the number of times it can be repeated
What is the Veterinary Cascade?
An exemption within the Veterinary Medicines Regulations and specifies that where a licensed veterinary medicine is not available, other meds can be considered
What are the record keeping requirements for POM-V and POM-VPS Rx’s?
Keep record in the POM register:
- Name of med
- Date of receipt or supply
- Batch number
- Quantity
- Name and address of the supplier or recipient
- Retain for 5 years
