What is a Patient Group Direction (PGD)?
A
A written direction allowing supply and/or administration of a SPECIFIED MEDICINE, by named HCPs, to a WELL-DEFINED GROUP of patients, for a SPECIFIC CONDITION

When can PGDs NOT be used?
A
- Long term management of a chronic condition
- Medical devices
- Radiopharmaceuticals
- Dressings
- As part of training
- Unlicensed meds
- Where there is delegation of responsibility to supply or administer medicine

How should PGD prescriptions be labelled?
A
Same as if they were a normal prescription

When can PGDs be used?
A
- Patients who have not previously presented to you e.g. minor injuries unit or other 1st contact unit
- Seasonal and other vaccination types
- Established services where assessment and treatment follows a clear pattern e.g. sexual health clinic

What is a Pandemic Treatment PGD?
A
Supply of a POM for the prevention or treatment of a disease that is anticipated to be pandemic

When should PGDs be used?
A
Where supply offers an advantage to patient care, without compromising patient safety

Q
What steps should be carried out before a PGD is authorised for use?
A
- Ensure PGD is consistent with the relevant SPC
- Make sure PGD has all relevant signatures (authorising body, pharmacist, doctor)
- Make sure both doctor and pharmacist have been involved in development of the PGD
