Why are Pregnancy Prevention Plans necessary?
- Prevent unwanted pregnancies
- Certain meds e.g. oral retinoids, valproate and thalidomide are teratogenic (PPPs protect women of childbearing age by minimising risk of becoming pregnant while taking these)
Who should oral retinoids be supplied under the supervision of?
A dermatologist
How long are oral retinoid Rx valid for under a PPP?
7 days - should be dispensed on the day of writing (Good Practice)
What is the maximum quantity of oral retinoid that can be supplied?
- 30 days’ supply
- > 30 days can be supplied if patient proves they’re not under a PPP
What are the general aspects of a PPP?
- Education for HCPs and patients
- Pregnancy testing before and after treatment
- Contraception requirements
- Distribution control
Should a patient be advised to STOP taking their valproate medication if an unplanned pregnancy occurs?
NO - they should be advised to see their prescriber urgently to review treatment though
Only when should valproate be prescribed to women and girls of child-bearing age?
- When nothing else works
- AND they’re part of a PPP
