Vetebral Column and Spinal Nerves Flashcards
Dorsal/Ventral Roots = Sensory or Motor?
Dorsal= sensory; Ventral= motor
Filum terminale (composition, what it connects to, and function)
Composed of pia matter which previously surrounded the spinal cord. It projects downward and connects the conus medullaris to the back of the coccyx. This tension functions to stabilize the entire spinal cord
Role of articular processes of vertebrate
These projections serve the purpose of fitting with other vertebrate above and below. The actual region of contact is called the articular facet
Distinguish the different vertebrate from each other.
CERVICAL- less pointy spinous process (2 little points on posterior side). Presence of transverse foramen.
THORACIC- smaller body than lumber. 3 points on posterior side (like lowercase “t”)
LUMBAR- largest body, 5 points on posterior side
SACRUM- very distinct shape, 5 vertebrate fused to 1
Vertebral ligaments
Anterior longitudinal ligament (in front of vertebral body), posterior longitudinal ligament (right behind body), ligamentum flavum (yellow and between pedicles), interspinous ligament (between spinous processes), supraspinous ligament (most posterior, runs on top of spinous processes)
Clavicles, nipples and belly button are landmarks for which respective vertebrate?
C5, T4 and T10 respectively
How many of each type of vertebrate compose the vertebral column?
7 Cervical, 12 Thoracic, 5 Lumbar, 5 Sacral (fused), sometimes a coccygeal
What is between the pedicles and the spinous processes?
The lamina
Meninges of spinal cord
Dura mater, arachnoid mater, sub arachnoid space, pia mater, spinal cord
