Face Flashcards
Main bones of the skull which contribute to the face.
Frontal bone, Sphenoid bone, Parietal bone, Temporal bone, Occipital bone, Mandible, Zygomatic bone, Maxilla, Lacrimal bone,
Main foramen on the face (used for trigeminic nerve)
Mental foramen, Infra-orbital foramen, Supra-orbital notch/foramen
The 2 main functional groups of the face muscles
Muscles of Facial Expression and Muscles of Mastication
Important muscles of facial expression
Orbicularis oculi (most important), Frontalis (frontal belly), Orbicularis oris (around mouth), Occipital belly (back of head), Auriculars (superior, anterior and posterior to ear), Buccinator (cheek), Platysma, Mentalis (chin), Nasalis, and Levator labii superioris
Muscles of Mastication
Temporalis, Masseter, Medial Pterygoid = all close mouth
Lateral Pterygoid= opens mouth
List the nerve supply to the face.
Motor (CN V and CN VII), Sensory (CN V), Parasympathetics (CN VII and CN IX)
Trigeminal nerves
(1) Ophthalmic n. (CN V1)- supraorbital
(2) Maxillary n. (CN V2)- infraorbital
(3) Mandibular n. (CN V3)- mental
Branches of the facial nerve (CN VII)
Ten Zebras Bought My Car (temporal, zygomatic, buccal, mandibular, cervical)
CN V nerve which has both sensory and motor functioning
Mandibular nerve (CN V3)
Glands in face which receive parasympathetic nerves
Parotid gland (usually destroyed in dissection) and submandibular gland
Vessel in cheek often confused for an artery
Parotid duct
Main blood supply to the face
SALFORM arteries from the external carotid, branches of the right Subclavian artery
Major artery which runs through the cheek (near parotid duct)
Maxillary Artery
