Inflammation of the vestibular nerve with features of vestibular hypofunction, such as vertigo, nausea, vomiting, and gait instability

What is the cause of vestibular neuronitis?

A
  • Idiopathic

- Viral URTIs

What are the clinical features of vestibular neuronitis?

A
  • Severe vertigo
  • Nausea and vomiting
  • Gait instability
  • Horizontal nystagmus
  • Risk of falling to affected side

*No hearing loss or tinnitus

What is the management of vestibular neuronitis?

A
  • Vestibular rehabilitation exercises (preferred in chronic symptoms)
  • Buccal or IM prochlorperazine (rapid relief)
  • Short oral course of prochlorperazine or antihistamines
