What is the pathophysiology of otosclerosis?

A

Stapedial otosclerosis (most common site)

  • Fixation of stapes to the oval window
  • This produces conductive hearing loss

What are the clinical features of otosclerosis?

A
  • Slowly progressive conductive hearing loss
  • Tinnitus
  • Mild vertigo
  • Paracusis willisii: patients hear better in noisy environments
  • Schwartze sign: red-blue hue seen through the TM
