Vessels Flashcards
3 Types of Vessels?
Arterial System – blood away from heart
Venous System – blood toward heart
Lymphatic Vessels – lymphs towards heart
What are the 4 types of microcirculation?
typical capillary bed
arteriovenous anastomosis (AV shunt)
arterial portal system (2 capillary networks - kidney)
venous portal system (2 capillary network - liver)
artery vs vein?
artery = thick wall and lumen (circular)
vein = thick wall and lumen (irregular)
Endothelial cells of vessels and their function?
specialized simple squamous epithelium
modified junctional complexes
- selective permeable barrier
- modulate blood flow
- anti-thrombogenic (prevent blood clot)
Muscular Artery Tunics?
Tunica Intima
- endothelium, basement membrane, INTERNAL ELASTIC LAMINA
Tunica Media
- smooth muscle, external elastic lamina
Tunic Adventitia
- loose CT, nervi vasorum, vasa vasorum
Elastic Arteries
Tunica Intima
- endothelium, basement membrane, subendothelial CT with smooth muscle, internal elastic lamina
Tunica Media (THICK)
- smooth muscle, ELASTIC FIBER, external elastic lamina
Tunic Adventitia
- loose CT, macrophage, fibroblast, nervi vasorum, vasa vasorum
Small Artery vs Arteriole
artery - internal elastic lamina with 4 layers smooth
arteriole - 1 layer smooth muscle
Capillary structure, function, type?
- single layer of endothelial cell with basement membrane (no tunica media/adventitia)
- 1 RBC in lumen
- fenestrated (pores) vs discontinuous (incomplete)
Venule
- single layer of endothelial cell with basement membrane (no tunica media/adventitia)
Post capillary venule = more than 1 RBC in lumen
Collecting venule = smooth muscle coat
Veins
Tunica Intima
- endothelium, basement membrane, subendothelial CT with smooth muscle, internal elastic lamina
Tunica Media
- smooth muscle
Tunic Adventitia (THICK)
- loose CT, nervi vasorum, vasa vasorum, SMOOTH MUSCLE
Vena Cavae
Tunica Intima
- endothelium, basement membrane, subendothelial CT with smooth muscle
Tunica Media
- smooth muscle
Tunic Adventitia (THICK)
- loose CT, nervi vasorum, vasa vasorum, longitudinal bundles SMOOTH MUSCLE
Lymph vessels flow and properties?
unidirectional and passive
- anchoring filaments – keep lumen open
- valves
- thin endothelial wall with amorphous irregular lumen
