Vertebrates and Invertebrates Flashcards
What are vertebrates?
Animals with backbones.
What is the main characteristic of the phylum chordata?
The animals within the chordata phylum have a supporting rod running the length of their body.
What are the five main groups that scientists sort vertebrates into?
- Oxygen absorbtion
- Reproduction inside
- Reproduction outside
- Fertilisation
- Thermoregulation
What is the scientific word for ‘an organism that produces young born live?’
Viviparous
What is the scientific word for ‘an organism that lays eggs?’
Oviparous
What type of fertilisation is the kind which occurs inside the females body called?
Internal fertilistaion
What type of fertilisation is the kind which occurs outside the females body called?
External fertilisation
What is the scientific word for an organism that controls their own body temperature?
Homeotherm
What is the scientific word for an organism thats body temperature varies with the environment temperature?
Poikilotherm
Bats and birds are vertebrates with wings, but they are classified in different vertebrate groups. Explain why it is sometimes difficult to to classify vertebrates using these examples to help you.
Bats and birds both have wings and can fly, so if you only looked at these characteristics you would put them in the same vertebrate group. Both bats and birds absorb oxygen through their lungs and they are homeothermic. But other characteristics show that they are very different and should be classified in different groups. Bats are mammals because they give birth to live young. Birds have feathers and lay hard shelled
