Genes Flashcards
Where in a cell are chromosomes located?
Nucleus
How many copies of each chromosome are in a body cell?
Two
What is a gene?
A gene is a short piece of DNA t a particular point on a chromosome.
What does a gene do
Codes for a charateristic
What is an alleles?
A different form of gene which produce different variations of characteristics
What does it mean if a person is heterozygous for a gene?
It means that they have different alleles of the same gene.
Do chromosomes of the same type have a different or same size?
Same
Do chromosomes of the same type have the same genes in a different or same order?
Same
What do you call a person whose genes have the same allele on both chromosomes?
Homozygous for that gene
What does the genotype show?
The alleles, which are forms of genes, in the individual.
What does phenotype mean?
The characteristics which are produced from the genotype.
If a person in heterozygous for a gene and their genotype for that gene is Bb what will be their phenotype the dominant or recessive allele?
Dominant
When is the only time the recessive allele will show in the phenotype?
If both copies in the genotype are recessive.
