Responding to Stimuli Flashcards
How can you test how sensitive a persons skin is?
This can be tested by touching different parts of the skin with two points and finding out how far apart the points have to b so that they can be detected as two points instead of one.
Are all parts of the skin the same sensitivity?
No
What is a synapse?
The small gap between where two neurones meet.
Can the electrical impulse from one neurone cross the synapse to the other?
No
In between two neurones what carries the impulse from one through the synapse to the other?
Neurotransmitters
Explain how an electrical nerve impulse travels from one neurone to the next.
The electrical nerve impulse reaches the end of the axon. Electrical impulses cause chemical neurotransmitters to be released into the synapse. Neurotransmitters cause a new electrical impulse in the next neurone.
What is the reflex arc?
The simplest neurone pathway from a receptor cell to an effector organ.
What is the average number of neurones in a reflex arc?
Three
How many neurones are in the knee jerk reflex arc?
Two
