Evolution Flashcards
Explain what is natural selection and how it occurs.
Natural selection is where the environment selects which individuals pass on their genes to the next generation because individuals of a species show variation which can mean that some individuals will be better able to survive in their environment and produce more healthy offspring than others.
What does it mean if an organism is better adapted?
It means that they are better able to survive.
Explain how overproduction happens.
When adults produce more young than the environment can support when they are adults
What can overproduction by adults create between their offspring?
A struggle for existance
What is an advantageous variation?
A characteristic which better adapts an organism to the environment that they live in than others.
Will an advantageous variation give an organism a better or worse chance of survival?
Better
What happens to individual organisms that are not born with advantageous variations compared to the ones that are?
These individuals with variations that are not as well adapted are less likely to survive and will not produce offspring due to dying. Whereas the ones who are more adapted will reproduce passing on their advantageous variations to their young.
What did Charles Darwin suggest about natural selection if the environment changes?
He suggested that natural selection will result in characteristics of a new species gradually changing from generation to generation.
What is characteristics of a new species gradually changing from generation to generation called?
Evlolution
Who suggested that if the environment changes, natural selection will result in characteristics of a new species changing gradually from generation to generation?
Charles Darwin
What year was Charles Darwin born?
1809
What year did Charles Darwin die?
1882
Organisms that are more closely related share a greater proportion of similar what?
DNA
Explain how geographical isolation could result in the evolution of new species.
Some individuals get separated from the rest of the population. Different conditions in the new place will select for different variations. Evolution by natural selection will change that characteristics of the individuals in the new place. Eventually the individuals in the new place may change so much that they could not breed with the rest of the species if they were together. So they would be a new species.
