Sensitivity Flashcards
What makes up the central nervous system?
Brain and spinal cord
Is the spine the same thing as the spinal cord?
No
What do the sense organs produce when there is a change in the environment?
Electrical impulse
What in sense organs detect the changes in the environment?
Receptors
Give two examples of a sense organ.
Eyes and ears
What is a stimulus?
A change in the environment detected by receptor cells
What is the name for the nerves that join the central nervous system to the sense organs and effector organs?
Neurones
What are the three main types of neurones?
- sensory
- motor
- relay
What is the job of the sensory neurone?
To carry impulses to the central nervous system.
What is the job of the motor neurone?
To carry impulses from the central nervous system to effector organs.
Where can relay neurones be found?
In the central nervous system
What is the job of the dendtrite?
To collect impulses from receptor cells
What do axon endings do?
Pass impulses to other neurones
Explain how the structure of dendrons and axons is related to their function of carrying nerve impulses.
The long dendron carries the nerve impulse from receptor cells. The long axon carries the nerve impulse to other neurones. The fatty myelin sheath insulates the neurone, so that the electrical impulse is carried quickly to the end of the axon.
