Hormones Flashcards
What is the nickname for hormones?
Chemical messengers
Where are hormones produced?
In the endocrine glands
Where are hormones released into from the endocrine glands?
Blood
What are the two hormones that control blood glucose regulation (which is part of homeostasis)?
Insulin and glucAgon
What is glycogen?
A type of carbohydrate
What is glucagon?
A type of hormone
How does the body respond to a rise in blood glucose concentration?
Pancreas increases secretion of insulin and decreases the secretion of glucagon.
Insulin causes muscle and liver cells to remove glucose from the blood ad store it as glycogen.
This allows the body to return to normal blood glucose range by falling in blood glucose concentration.
How does the body respond to a fall in blood glucose concentration?
Pancreas decreases secretion of insulin and increases secretion of glucagon.
Glucagon causes liver cells to convert glycogen into glucose and release it into the blood.
This allows the body to return to normal range by rises in blood glucose concentration
