Q

Explain how food moves through the frog’s mouth and the purpose of each part. (from the buccal cavity to the ileum)

A

Food first enters the buccal cavity and it travels down the oesophagus, it is a muscular tube that carries food down to the stomach through muscular contractions.

When the food enters the stomach, it serves as a storage and mixing chamber. It is broken down by acidic secretions and churned by muscular contractions. The stomach aids in the release of partially digested food into the intestines through the pyloric sphincter.

The pyloric sphincter regulates food flow also know as chyme. It contracts and relaxes to ensure that the chyme is received by the small intestines in manageable amounts to optimise digestion and absorption.

The duodenum is the first part of the small intestines which connects to the stomach. Its function is to mix digestive enzymes secreted by the pancreas and the bile from the liver and gallbladder with the chyme.

The ileum is the last and longest part of the intestines. Its primary function is to absorb nutrients from the partially digested chyme which enters from the duodenum. Because of the villi, it increases the surface area to maximizes nutrient absorption.

Q

Suggest the general Internal anatomy of the King Toad.

A

The viscera which is a term for all the internal organs in the body cavity is covered by the peritoneum, where it forms a double layer that supports the mesentery. Therefore the coelom contains no organs as the viscera lies outside of the peritoneum.

Q

What is the description and function of the mesentery ?

A

The mesentery is a thin transparent membrane that attaches the small intestines and the other digestive organs to the dorsal body wall. It supports and suspends the organs in the abdominal cavity. It also prevents the digestive tracts from twisting and tangling.

Q

What is the description of the large intestines and its function?

A

The large intestines is a short wide tube merging into a narrower chamber called the cloaca. It is responsible for the absorption of water and electrolytes from the reminder indigestible material. It also aids with the formation and the elimination of of feces by compacting the waste material into solid pellets.

16
Q

What is the description of the Hepatic portal vein?

A

It is the blood supply to and from the stomach and the ileum which runs through the mesentery. This vein carries nutrient rich blood from the intestines to the liver for processing.

17
Q

What is the description of the Liver and its function ?

A

The liver is a large brownish three lobed organ. It is responsible for the production of bile which helps with the absorption and breakdown of fats in the small intestines. The liver also aids with detoxifying any harmful chemicals in the body and stores glycogen which can be used for energy when needed.

18
Q

What is the description of the gallbladder and its function ?

A

The gallbladder is a small round organ that is located between the lobes of the liver. It’s function is to store and release bile into the small intestines which helps to breakdown fats.

19
Q

What is the description of the pancreas and its function?

A

The pancreas lies between the stomach and the duodenum and is pink-orange with multiple lobes. Its an important digestive organ that produces digestive enzymes to break down carbohydrates, fats and proteins in the small intestines. It also produces insulin and glucagon to help regulate blood glucose levels .

20
Q

What is the description of the Common bile duct?

A

The common bile duct is a tube like structure that carries bile from the liver and the gallbladder into the small intestines.

21
Q

What is the description of a pancreatic duct.

A

It is a small tube like structure that carries digestive enzymes from the pancreas to the duodenum of the small intestines.

22
Q

What are the features of the female reproductive system.

A

The ovaries are responsible for the maturation and the production of the eggs, they are connected to the kidney by the mesentery and have no direct connection to them.

fat bodies are attached to each end of the ovaries, to aid in energy production during embryonic development and reproduction.

Oviducts are tightly coiled tubes, they aid in the transportation of the eggs from the ovaries to the cloaca.

23
Q

What is the male reproductive system?

A

The testes are the main reproductive organs of the toad, they are located underneath the kidneys and produces sperm.

the vasa Efferentia are a series of tubes that are found in the mesentery which connects the kidneys and the testes and aid in the transportation of sperm from the testes to the kidneys

Ureter is a duct that runs from the kidneys to the cloaca. the first function is that it serves as a urinary duct that transports urine from the kidneys to the cloaca for excretion. The second function is that it acts as a passage way for the sperm to be released

There is also a fat body attached to the testis and it aids in energy storage and metabolism.

The Bidder’s Organ contains primordial egg follicles that normally doesn’t develop.

24
Q

What organs are compromised in the excretory system ?

A

Kidneys, liver, urinary bladder, adrenal gland, ureter.
