Marine (WK 2) Flashcards
What are the main few phyla in a Marine environment ?
Porifera, Cnidarian, Platyhelminthes, Annelida, Mollusca, Echinodermata, Nematoda, Chordata, Arthropoda, Sipunculida, Bryozoa, Nemertea.
What is the term benthic ?
Benthic are animals that are attached to or found near the sea floor.
What is the term Pelagic ?
Pelagic is where an organism lives in a water column.
What are the cost of marine life ?
Being sessile and having low O2.
What are the benefits of being in a marine environment ?
Stable environment, iso-osmotic conditions, no desiccation, support for body tissues and surrounded by food.
What are some exclusive features to marine life?
Broadcast spawning, being sessile, Suspension feeding
What are the type of algaes ?
green, red, brown
Chlorophyta, Rhodophyta, Phaeophyta
What are Autotrophs and heterotrophs ?
Autotrophs are phytoplankton, weak swimming algae that is photosynthetic.
Heterotrophs floating / weak swimming zooplankton/ animals
What is a ontogenetic shift ?
It is an ecological phenomenon where an organism changes it’s diet / habitat during it’s development
What are zooids ?
They are usually colonial, these colonies are usually 4 individual modified zooids that depend on each other to survive
eg: Float, tentacles, digestive, reproduction
What is the relationship between a coral and algal cell ?
They have a mutualistic relationship.
How do you classify a food web ?
The order of the Food web typically starts with primary supplier, primary consumer, secondary consumer and tertiary consumer
What are the different types of symbiosis ?
There are 3 types of symbiosis
Mutualistic, where both organisms benefit of each other
Parasitic, only 1 organism benefits off the relationship compromising the others health.
Commensal, where there is no benefit or harm done to both parties.
