Vertebrae Flashcards
What does the Vertebrae consist of?
Cervical
Thoracic
Lumbar
Sacrum
Coccygeal
What does C1 mean?
C1 is known as the Atlas
What is C2?
C2 is known as the axis
What is Neutral Spine?
The ideal position to minimise stress on the vertebrae and it’s ligaments
What is Kyphosis?
An abnormally excessive convex curvature of the spine as it occurs in the thoracic and sacral regions (rounded upper back)
What is Lordosis?
An excessive inward curve of the lower back (can occur at cervical spine also)
What is Scoliosis?
The abnormal lateral curvature of the spine (sideways curve s-shaped or c-shaped)
What is muscle imbalance?
A condition in the body that is present when opposing muscles are out of balance with one another in terms of strength, length, tension
What happens when opposing muscle groups are imbalanced?
One group is tighter and shorter than the other, which is elongated and lax
What causes muscle imbalance?
Repetitive activity
Poor exercise habits
What is Reciprocal inhibition?
When you engage a muscle, the brain sends a signal to its opposing muscle to relax, this allows engaging muscle to tense up without tension
