Connective Tissue Flashcards
What is Connective Tissue?
Supports, connects, surrounds or separates different types of tissues and organs in the body
What are the structures needed to give the body it’s shape and functionality?
Cartilage
Ligaments
Tendons
What are the 3 types of Cartilage?
Hyaline (Articular) Cartilage
Fibrocartilage
Elastic Cartilage
List characteristics of Hyaline Cartilage
Most common type
Covers the ends of bones
Glossy blue-white appearance
Very tough
Present in synovial and cartilaginous joints
List the characteristics of Fibrocartilage
Found in intervertebral discs, joint capsules, and ligaments
Strongest type of cartilage
Can act as a shock absorber in joints
List the characteristics of Elastic Cartilage
Found in the external ear, epiglottis and larynx
Threadlike network of fibres which contain elastin
Elastic properties allow it to return to original shape
Collagen fibres to give it strength
What is Cartilage?
Very tough, dense and fibrous. The 3 characteristics allow it to withstand great forces of torsion and compression
What are Ligaments?
Connect bone to bone
Provide joint stability
Aid joint movement
Prevent unwanted movement
What are Tendons?
To transmit the forces produced by muscles to allow the bones to act as levers
Connect muscle to bone
