Vertebrae Flashcards
body
centre part where the disc sits
spinous process
posterior to body, where muscles/ligaments of the spine attach
transverse processes
branch off from the pedicles/side, key to thoracic as join with ribs
vertebral foramen
gap for the spinal cord to pass through
laminae
arch to connect spinous process to vertabra
pedicles
connect transverse processes to vertabra
cervical vertabra
small body, large vertebral foramen, hole within the transverse process (transverse foramen) to allow carotid arteries to pass through
thoracic vertabra
loss of transverse foramen, enlarged transverse processes to fuse with ribs
lumbar vertabra
larger body and processes to account for weight and muscle to support
C1 vertabra
atlas - supports the head, lack of a vertebral body, flattened transverse processes for head to rest
C2 vertabra
axis - allows for rotation of the head by enlarged spinous process
sacrum
five levels
coccyx
four levels, often fused
