Heart Structure Flashcards
left atrium
pumps blood to left ventricle
right atrium
pumps blood to right ventricle
superior vena cava
drains into right atrium, carries blood from upper half of the body
inferior vena cava
drains into the right atrium, carries blood from the lower half of the body
pulmonary trunk
branches off into the right and left pulmonary arteries
pulmonary veins
four - carry oxygenated blood to the heart
aorta
forms an ascending and descending arch
anteriorly
right side more visible
posteriorly
left side more visible
bicuspid
between left atrium and ventricle, two cusps
tricuspid
between right atrium and right ventricle, three cusps
chordae tendinae and papillary muscles
muscles contract with contraction of ventricle causing chordae to pull down on valves causing them to shut along with blood flow and prevents them from blowing back into the atria
semi lunar valves
three cusps, gravity pushes the valves shut
fibrous pericardium
thick, adhered to diaphragm and parietal serous, can stretch
parietal serous
thin, adhered to fibrous and pericardial cavity
