Head and Neck Cardiovascular Anatomy Flashcards
external carotid artery
branches off from common carotid, continues to branch off into other arteries
internal carotid artery
branches off from common carotid, does not branch off into other arteries and instead directly supplies the skull
vertebral artery
branches off from subclavian, passes through transverse foramen in cervical vertebrae
superficial thyroid artery
most inferior branch off external carotid, supplies top of gland
ascending pharyngeal artery
branches off superior to superficial thyroid
lingual artery
branches off superior to ascending pharyngeal
facial artery
branches off from lingual artery
occipital artery
branches off superior to lingual, supplies occipital lobe
posterior auricular artery
branches off superior to occipital, supplies ear
maxillary artery
branches off superior to posterior auricular
superficial temporal artery
branches off superior to maxillary artery, supplies temporal lobe
basilar artery
formed when right and left vertebral arteries converge
circle of willis
branching between internal carotid and basilar arteries to connect them - maintains perfusion throughout the brain despite presence of clot
external and internal jugular veins
drain into the superior vena cava (internal is bigger)
venous sinuses
venous channels forming within the brain
