Paradox
An internal contradiction; statement that appears to contradict it self
Example: “If he doesn’t watch his health, he is going to wake up dead” is an example of a paradox.
Mundane
Lacking interest, unexciting
Example: The film was boring, a mundane exercise in horror movie cliches.
Strident
Harsh-sounding, loud
Example: She had a strident voice that sent shivers down my back.
Facetious
Amusing; joking at an inappropriate time.
Example: His facetious criticisms were out of place at the moment; we were too upset to see the humor of the situation.
Inherent
Inborn; existing as a basic or natural characteristic
Example: A love of hunting is inherent in cats.
Dispel
To drive away, make disappear
Example: The good-humored joke dispelled the tension in the room.
Evoke
To stir up purposely; bring or recall to conscious mind
Example: When I watched the sad movie, it evoked a sadness in me that I didn’t know I felt.

Example: After an hour, the storm abated and the sky began to clear.

Example: We could not repress certain nervousness as the plane bumped along the runway.
