Ventilation Flashcards
What is the name of the tube that carries air into the lungs?
The Trachea.
What does the Trachea split into?
Bronchi.
What do the Bronchi split into?
Bronchiole.
Where does gas exchange take place?
The alveoli
How are the alveoli adapted for gas exchange?
They have a large surface area allowing for lots of diffusion to occur.
They have moist surfaces allowing for the gases to be dissolved easily.
They have thin walls, decreasing the distance over which diffusion into the capillaries must occur.
What happens to the diaphragm when you breathe in?
It contracts.
What happens to the intercostal muscles when you breathe in?
They contract.
How do you breathe in?
When the muscles surrounding the lungs contract, the volume expands, allowing air to travel into the lungs.
