Transferring Nutrients around a plant Flashcards
Why do large organisms need transport systems?
Because they have a very small surface area to volume ratio. This means that it takes a long time for nutrients to diffuse into every part of the cell. Therefore, they use transport systems to make it quicker.
What are Xylem?
They are microscopic vessels that run through the plant. Xylem carry Water and Minerals away from the roots where they are absorbed, and to the other parts of the plant.
What are Phloem?
Phloem transport glucose in the form of sucrose (sugar) to every part of the plant. They also carry amino acids.
What is the structure of Xylem?
It is a continuous vessel that is dead and covered in a woody material called Lignin which keeps the structure.
What is the structure of Phloem?
Phloem is made from living cells. It is a tower of sieve cells which allow nutrients through and have no nucleus. This keeps the structure of the vessel. These sieve cells have companion cells which produce energy for them.
What is a vascular bundle?
It is a bundle of xylem and phloem vessels.
Why do roots need glucose?
They use active transport to transfer the minerals and water from the soil to the roots.
