Methods of Transferring Nutrients Flashcards
What is Diffussion?
It is a method of transfer that requires no energy. The nutrient is dissolved in a liquid. That nutrient that travels naturally from a high concentration to a low concentration.
What is Active Transfer?
It is like diffusion, but the body uses energy to force the material to transfer from a low concentration to a high concentration.
What is Osmosis?
It is where water travels through a semipermeable wall, from a low concentration to a high concentration. This means that only water can flow through.
What is a Hypertonic Solution?
It is a solution with a high concentration of solute.
What is a Hypotonic Solution?
It is a solution with a high concentration of solvent.
What is an Isotonic Solution?
It is a solution with the same concentration of solvent as the object put into it.
What happens to Animal cells in a Hypertonic and a Hypotonic solution?
In a Hypotonic solution, the animal cell will burst, and in a Hypertonic solution, it will crenate or shrink.
What happens to Plant cells in a Hypertonic and a Hypotonic solution?
In a Hypotonic solution, it won’t burst, because of the cell wall. It just inflates, becoming turgid. In a Hypertonic solution, it won’t shrink, it will just become Plasmolyzed.
