Venous Drainage of the Abdomen Flashcards
What are the two venous systems that drain abdominal structures called?
The portal venous system.
The systemic venous sytem.
what is the role of the systemic venous system? and what is its major vessel?
transports deoxygenated blood to the right atrium of the heart.
IVC.
what is the anatomical position of the IVC?
located on the posterior abdominal wall; anteriorly to the vertebral column and to the right of the abdominal aorta.
What structures does the IVC drain?
all structures below the diaphragm.
Which structures are drained first by the portal venous system?
spleen
pancreas
gallbladder
abdominal GI tract
what is the role of the portal venous system?
carries venous blood (rich in nutrients that have been extracted from food) to the liver for processing.
what is the major vessel of the portal venous system?
portal vein
how is the portal vein formed?
by the union of the splenic vein and SM vein posterior to the neck of the pancreas at the level L2
Describe the oesophageal porto-systemic anastomoses.
between the oesophageal branch of the left gastric vein and the oesophageal tributaries to the azygous system.
describe the rectal porto-systemic anastomoses.
between the superior rectal vein and the inferior rectal veins.
describe the retroperitoneal porto-systemic anastomoses
between the portal tributaries of the mesenteric veins and the retroperitoneal veins.
what is a porto-systemic anastomoses?
a connection between the veins of the portal venous system, and the veins of the systemic venous system.
label this abdominal venous drainage
what vessels merge to form the IVC and at which vertebral level does this occur
left and right common iliac veins at L5
where does the inferior mesenteric vein drain to?
splenic vein
