Vegetation Adaptions To Peatland Flashcards
Sphagnum is well adapted - it has a unique ability of its
Leaves to exchange cations, = a high capacity to retain nutrients.
Water-absorbent; retains moisture.
Dominated by bryophytes; Plants that
Don’t have vascular tissue; mosses; low requirements for nutrients and light.
High CEC means hydrogen ions are exchanged for
Basic cations, these are absorbed onto the leaves and the hydrogen ions are released into the soil.
This reduces colonisation by other plants.
Water-absorbent = more
Waterlogged conditions in the environment, thus excluding some animal and plant species.
Sedge family -
Adapted to low levels of oxygen and nutrients.
Carnivorous plants - indicate low levels of
Nitrogen and phosphorous in the environment.
Carnivorous plants - Trap and digest
Animals which provide nutrients that are lacking in the soil.
