Peatlands Flashcards
Requires significant organic matter production,
In excess of decomp.
Significant amounts of partly
Decayed plant material.
Require restricted drainage,
Limiting the removal of dissolved or particulate carbon.
Hydrology is dominated by
Precipitation, therefore peatland is nutrient poor.
Reduced decomp rates from combination of
Cool temperatures and anaerobic conditions.
Can be subdivided into
Bogs and fens; depending on hydrology.
Bogs: isolated from groundwater, main water supply is from
Precipitation.
Bogs: Have a low pH and are
Nutrient poor.
Bogs: Dominated by mosses,
Sedges and low woody shrubs, with thick leaves to reduce nutrient loss and herbivory as they would be difficult to digest.
Fens: Receive some groundwater or through flow, therefore are
More nutrient rich
Fens: Dominated by sphagnum, or by
Mosses, sedges, grasses (with increasing nutrient availability).
Generally less productive than
Other vegetation communities in the same zone and less productive than other wetlands.
Water table is generally near the
Surface and relatively constant over the year.
