Carbon Entry & Transport In Wetlands Flashcards
The other half of the GPP is oxidised by the plant for energy (respiration) and released as
Carbon dioxide through the leaves into the atmosphere and through the roots into the soil solution as DIC.
Photosynthesis by vegetation causes carbon to be drawn from the
Local atmosphere and converted to organic carbon. This is the GPP. About half of the carbon fixed in PS becomes plant tissue.
The roots can release DOC into both
Aerobic and anaerobic soil solutions.
DOC and DIC can enter wetland from surrounding areas in
Groundwater, through flow or flood water.
The death of leaves and plants adds large amounts of
POC to aerobic and anaerobic soil solutions.
This is nearly the total amount of carbon that has been fixed over the growing period.
POC can be transported to wetlands from
Other areas such as floodplain wetlands.
