Marshes Flashcards
No deep accumulation of
Peat.
Dominated by
Non-woody vascular plants.
Significant flow of subsurface water, often some contact with
Region groundwater table - Results in more nutrients from mineral soils.
Usually more dominated by
Mineral soils that peatlands are.
Can be either
Saltwater or freshwater marshes
Saltwater marshes are often replace by
Mangrove swamps in tropical and subtropical regions.
Generally have a higher pH, higher available
Calcium content, high base saturation and higher nutrient content than peatlands as a result of subsurface lateral flow.
Can have a highly
Diverse biota.
Since marshes are either flooded or dry, plants must be able to
Tolerate deflects in oxygen, but also the oxidation and drying of soil.
Salt marsh plants must be able to tolerate
Extremes in salinity, waves and tidal floods.
Can tolerate longer periods of
Inundation - mean water level is above the surface.
