Peatland Formation - Terrestrialization Flashcards
Organic matter production comes from internal lake production, such as
Algae, material falling into the lake such as leaves, and from organic matter or sediment carried in streams and rivers.
Occurs when shallow lakes are gradually filled by the
Accumulation of organic matter deposited on the lake floor and from the advance of peatland vegetation from either side of the lake.
Plants such as reeds and mosses can form a mat that
Floats on the lakes surface. This gradually thickens as leaves die and other plants grow on top.
Quaking bog: formed when the thick mat on the
Lake surface becomes colonised by other plants.
Kettle hole bogs: form when a block of ice left from a
Retreating glacier forms a deep hole which fills with water and then eventually peat.
