vedanta sutras part 1 Flashcards
what are the sutras
minimalistic interpretations of the upanashids meant to systemize conflicting points of view
what are the two main problems with the sutras
- too concise
2. unclear which topical text they refer to
what was the main problem after clear and coherent commentaries of the sutras were written
all commentators disagreed with one another.
what was sankaras interpretation
Sankara claimed that the world was impersonal, maya is an illusion in which knowledge of brahman is communicated to achieve liberation. Contradictory passages are referred to as conventional reality while supporting passages are reffered to as absolute.
what was ramanuja’s interpretation and explanation of contradictions
God is personal, pervades all souls, worlds and they make up his body. They all are one but they can’t be seperated from him.
Ramanuja’s metaphor
Soul is god, who controls and resides in the body which are the souls and the world
Arguements against sankara
- Knowledge is dualistic, hearing, sensory perception, words (all different from one another), so how can one learn about a nondualistic world if the knowledge they are recieving itself isn’t real?
- Where does maya come from. Can’t be produced by the ever pure brahman
vedanthin method
- State the opponent point of view (poorva praksha)
2. State their own view (siddhanta)
Madva philosophy
God is independent from the material world because god is pure and should not be influenced by any negativity found in the marterial world.
nimbarkha philosophy
In between ramanuja and sankara and focuses on bhakti or love of god
vallabha philosophy
shuddadvaita philosophy which focuses on love of god and the philosophy that all things are made of satchitanada
sat and chit are the souls which suffer when anada or krishna is covered. Matter is the supplemental non concious entity.
