Vectorbourne general info Flashcards
what is a vector?
A disease carrier
what is a vector-borne disease?
infectious agents such as viruses, bacteria, and parasites that living creatures carry and pass on to other living creatures
What are some examples of a vector?
mosquitoes, ticks, and mammals
What is the vector for malaria?
Mosquito, (Anopheles)
What are examples of Tick Borne Diseases?
Lyme Disease, Rocky Mountain Spotted Fever
What are two examples of animal-human transmitted diseases?
Rabies, Toxoplasmosis
Most cases of malaria in the US are caused by what?
they are imported, travelers going to endemic countries and not following prevention measures
What are three examples of mosquito borne diseases?
West Nile, Zika, Malaria
What is the best way to prevent mosquito borne diseases?
drain standing water, use EPA approved insect repellents (DEET, Picarin, Oil of Lemon Eucalyptus), cover up, avoid outdoor from dusk to dawn, control populations of mosquitoes, and appropriately dispose of dead birds
What type of mosquito primarily transmits Zika virus?
Aedes aegypti (same vector for chikungunva, dengue, and yellow fever)
What is an example vector for toxoplasmosis?
Cats- they become infected by eating infected rodents, birds, or other small animals. The parasite is then passed the cat’s feces in an oocyst form. Wear gloves if changing litter box!
Ways to prevent tick borne diseases?
Avoid heavily wooded areas, use DEET or permethrin repellents for skin/clothing, wash/bathe after been outdoors, Tick Check!, appropriately remove ticks with tweezers.
How is rabies transmitted?
transmitted usually through the saliva of infected animals (bites) but can be transmitted through exposure of the mucous membrane or rarely, infected saliva
