tick exposure or travel to area where lyme is present
What are the symptoms of Lyme disease?
non-specific sx but has a “BULLS EYE RASH”
erythema migranes, fatigue, chills, fever, headache, myalgia and joint aches, lymphadenopathy
If untreated, what symptoms can manifest in lyme disease?
- facial/bells palsy
- severe headaches and neck stiffness
- pain and swelling in large joints
- shooting pain that may interfere with sleep
- Heart palp, heart block, dizziness
how do you diagnose Lyme.
clinical presentation and history of tick bite.
how do you confirm lyme disease with laboratory testing?
antibody testing (may be negative early on, may also have false +)
If you suspect lyme infection what should you do while you wait for lab confirmation?
begin treatment w/ doxycycline or amoxicillin.
What happens in late stages of lyme disease?
- develope cardiac or neurologic involvement
- lyme arthritis
- Post treatment lyme disease symdrome (PTLDS) which is likely due to an autoimmune response
how do you prevent lyme disease?
- avoid heavily wooded areas
- use of DEET or permethrin repellants
- tick check
- appropriate removal of tick
