leads to vasodilation & ↓ BP
↓ Peripheral vascular resistance which ↑ cardiac output

Any situation that can result in ↓ BP Peripheral vascular disease CAD (coronary artery disease) CHF, cerebral insufficiency Tachycardia

A
Severe HTN Malignant HTN (organ damage) Hypertensive emergencies (BP > 180/120)

What are the adverse effects?
A
CNS: Dizziness, Headache, Anxiety CV: reflex tachycardia Skin: Abnormal hair growth (minoxidil) GI upset: Nausea & vomiting Cyanide toxicity with nitroprusside Pink/cherry-red skin, HA, Dizziness, & tachycardia

What are the nursing implications?
A
Hx for allergies Skin, cardiac, respiratory, abdominal Vitals, ECG, weight Labs: renal/hepatic fxn ineffective tissue perfusion lifestyle changes Monitor BP closely ↓ fluid volume, dehydration, vomiting, & diarrhea Safety precautions due to CNS Response to drug
