What is the action?
Block alpha 1 receptors
vasodilation = ↓ BP
Blocks alpha 2 receptors
prevents norepinephrine feedback loop = ↑ reflex tachycardia

Hint: “phen & amine”
Phenoxybenzamine
Phentolamine (more common)
What are the contraindications/caution?
Allergy
CAD
MI
What are the drug-drug interactions (DDI)?
Alcohol
What is the indications (use for)?
Dx & manage episodes of pheochromocytoma
Pheochromocytoma (rare condition); benign tumor in the adrenal gland; too many hormones = ↑ BP
What are the adverse effects?
↑ reflex tachycardia
GI effects: N & V, diarrhea, abdominal pain
CNS: Headache, weakness, & dizziness
related to vasodilation & ↓ BP; hypotension, flushing, arrhythmia & angina
What are the nursing implications?
Hx: contraindications/cautions
CNS: cardiac, respiratory, abdominal, urinary, perfusion
Vitals, ECG
Labs: electrolytes, renal/hepatic function, glucose
Take apical pulse; hold if below 60bpm
Monitor blood glucose
lifestyle changes
change position slowly
Do not crush extended-release formulations
