SNS Blockers; Beta-Blockers Flashcards
What is the action?
Blocks beta receptors in the ❤️
↓ HR, Cardiac Muscle contraction
Vasodilates → ↑ Blood flow to kidney leads to a ↓ in the release of renin
What is the selective beta-blocker drug names?
Hint: end in “olol”
atenol
Metoprolol
What is the action of the selective beta-blocker drugs?
block beta receptors in heart only
What is the non-selective beta-blocker drug name?
Propranolol
What is the action of the non-selective beta-blocker drug?
Block all beta receptors; more adverse effects
What are the contraindications?
Acute/Unstable Heart Failure Bradycardia & heart block Bronchospasm COPD Acute asthma
What are the cautions?
Renal/Hepatic dysfunction
Diabetes (blood glucose levels in hypo/hyper glycemia)
What are the drug-drug interactions (DDI)?
Clonidine
NSAIDs
Insulin/Hypoglycemic agents
What are the indications (use for)?
HTN Angina tachyarrhythmias Migraine HA MI Glaucoma Heart Failure Hyperthyroidism
What are the adverse effects?
CNS: Headache, Fatigue, dizziness, depression, insomnia, disorientation, memory loss
CV: Bradycardia & hypotension
Pulmonary: Bronchospasm’s, laryngospasm’s, cough, pulmonary edema
GU: ↓ libido & impotence
alterations in glucose levels
What are the nursing implications?
Monitor glucose closely in diabetic patients
Hx of lung conditions
take apical pulse prior to meds; hold if below 60bpm
Hx: contraindications & cautions
CNS; cardiac, respiratory, abdominal, urinary, perfusion
Vitals ECG
Labs: electrolytes, renal/hepatic function, glucose
Lifestyle modifications
change positions slowly
Do not crush extended-release formulations
