Vascular System Flashcards
At rest how much blood goes to the muscles and other organs?
15-20% to muscles
80-85% to other organs
At exercise how much blood goes to the muscles and other organs?
80-85% to muscles
15-20% to other organs
The percentage of blood is determined via vaso…
Vasodilation and Vasoconstriction
How does vasodilation/ vasoconstriction work?
The smooth muscle may constrict causing the arterioles to have a smaller lumen reducing blood flow vice versa
Explain what happens at the capillary bed.
Pre capillary sphincters block off flows and make the blood run through the central capillary rather than the peripheral. Therefore less blood travels through
What is VR dependant on
SV
How do you increase VR. List 5 things.
If blood is in superior vena cava then with GRAVITY it’ll fall back to the heart through veins
Invert the body (elevate legs)
Smooth muscle-> pulsating -> lumen reducing rhythmically
Pocket valves prevent back flow
Skeletal muscle pump - veins run through skeletal muscles-> when muscles contract they squeeze upon veins -> active recovery is better therefore
Respiratory pump - as thoracic cavity moves in and out during breathing the change in pressure causes veins to increase in pressure
