Altitude Training Flashcards
What’s altitude trainings goal?
To increase VO2max
How high is the minimum for altitude training?
Above 2000m or 8000ft
How much oxygen is in the air at high altitudes?
20.9%
Why is training at altitude harder?
Same proportion of air however it’s less dense with a lower ppO2
Altitude training is usually over 30 days. What happens within the 30 days?
Acclimatisation
Primary training
Recovery
How long do the effects of altitude training last for?
6-8 weeks
What benefits occur from altitude training?
The lower ppO2 leads to us having to make more EPO -> leading to an increase in RBC -> leading to an increase in concentration or haemoglobin -> increases oxygen carrying capacity -> increases the delay of OBLA -> increase tolerance of lactate
Therefore we increase VO2 max
Issues of altitude training.
Expensive/exclusive
Travel time/ stress
Temporary
Intensity
Altitude sickness -> Hypoxia
Alternatives to altitude training.
Hypoxic chambers
Hypoxic masks
