Q

Where did the original Dijon clones in the US come from?

Most Pinot Noirs in California and Oregon are a blend of three or more Dijon clones; what is a popular Dijon combination?

Why?

A

Domaine Ponsot.

115: Most planted in US. Well-rounded, works great on its own. Small berries and clusters. Regular yields.

667: Big with tight clusters. A workhorse structural clone; often destemmed.

777: Small, compact cluster, small berries, low-yielding, strong and intense colour due to thick skins and higher seed count, very aromatic with dark fruit. Structured and age worthy tannin.

Amongst others such as Pommard clone, the Wädenswil clone, or one or several heritage clones.

Dijon clones RIPEN EARLY; in the US climate this can result in very rapid sugar accumulation.
