First Single Vineyard Barbaresco?

A

1964 (Legendary vintage for Piedmont as a whole)

Bruno Giacosa ‘Santo Stefano’ [Albesani], Neive, Barbaresco. Last in 2012.

The Grand Marque’s was also formed in 1964 with 25 members. Not to be confused with the Champagne Academy formed in 1956 and had 12 members.

First Single vineyard Barolo?

A

1961

Inspired by a trip to burgundy Barolo’s first single vineyard labels are bottled: Prunotto’s Bussia (Montforte d’Alba) & Vietti’s Rocche di Castiglione (Castiglione Falleto).

Angelo Gaja (4th gene) takes over and does the first estate bottling [of the 1959 vintage]; prior to that sold in barrel and will be negociant bottlings.

Valgella, Inferno, Grumello, Sassella, and Maroggia.

may appear on the label if bottled in neighboring Switzerland. Aging may occur there as well however the wine and grapes still come the Italian Valtellina. This term is not applicable to Riserva or subzone designated bottlings.
